Dear Investor,
A few years ago, I was having a conversation with a friend of mine.
Let’s call him Dan.
Dan was a retired asset manager who really knew his way around money.
If anyone knew how to invest, it was him.
But he came to me looking for help managing his portfolio.
I asked him, “Dan, of all the people I know, you’re in the best position to deal with your own money. Why do you need help?”
“Pat,” he replied, “I could manage my own money, except for the ‘I’ part.”
He recognized that when it came to his own money, he had blind spots.
He recognized the value of having someone else help him see the mistakes he might make.
This is an important point to understand.
You don’t hire a coach, a financial advisor, or a consultant because you lack the expertise.
You hire one because they are not you… that means they will see things about you that you cannot see about yourself.
Am I saying you can't manage your own portfolio?
Not at all.
I’m saying we all have blind spots, and by definition, you can’t see your own.
That’s why it pays to get a second set of eyes on your portfolio before your years of progress get undone by a decision you made a long time ago – which may have made sense at the time.
But what kind of mistakes are we actually talking about?
Here's a simple example:
Over years of disciplined investing, your holdings naturally spread across multiple accounts — your RRSP, your TFSA, a non-registered account, maybe a spouse's RRSP, an old LIRA from a previous employer, your child’s RESP, and so on.
Each one made sense when you opened it.
But here's what can quietly happen over decades of doing everything right:
A position you started building in your RRSP years ago also exists in your non-registered account — and your TFSA.
Each decision was reasonable at the time.
But zoom out across all your accounts, and what feels like a diversified portfolio may be quietly 40% concentrated in a single sector or company.
That's not a mistake you made.
It's a mistake that accumulated — one reasonable decision at a time.
And when that sector hits a downturn, years of disciplined progress can be lost at a time when you have far less runway to recover than you did at 40.

Because we've spent over 25 years working exclusively with DIY Canadian investors who built their own portfolios.
After reviewing thousands of portfolios, we know exactly what to look for — and where the most costly blind spots tend to hide.
Today, we manage over $1 billion in assets for investors across the country — all with our "Safety-First" investing philosophy Canadian investors have trusted since 1995.
There's no catch. The call is genuinely free. If after speaking with us you're interested in exploring what working together looks like, we'll walk you through exactly what that relationship will look like and how we're compensated — clearly, with full transparency.
There's no obligation for you to work with us if you don't like what we present.
No.
The goal of the call is simple: understand your situation and show you how we'd approach it. If at the end of that conversation you're interested in working together, we'll walk you through exactly what that looks like. If you're not, we'll part ways — no follow-up pressure, no hard sell.
We work with investors who chose us because it made sense to them — not because someone wore them down.
Not at all. Many of our clients started exactly where you are – proud DIY investors who simply felt the stakes were now too high to do it alone.
Some chose to keep managing part of their portfolio, while we managed their core retirement assets.
Others were simply relieved to hand off their entire portfolio so they could enjoy life without watching the markets.
Either way, they stayed informed and in control.
On this phone call we will:
• Review your current portfolio.
• Share how we would restructure your portfolio based on your goals, risk tolerance, & stage of life.
• Learn about your (and your spouse’s) retirement needs and goals.
There is no cost, no catch, and no obligation to work with us.
Over time, your holdings get spread across 10+ accounts.
Each account made sense when you opened it.
Each decision was the right one at the time.
But here's what happened quietly over decades of disciplined investing:
The longer you invest, and the better you're at it, the more complex your potfolio becomes.
A position you started building in your RRSP years ago also exists in your non-registered account — and your TFSA.
Each decision was reasonable at the time.
But zoom out across all your accounts and what feels like a diversified portfolio may be quietly 40% exposed to a single sector or company.
That's not a mistake you made. It's a mistake that accumulated — one reasonable decision at a time.
And when that sector hits a downturn, years of disciplined progress can be lost at a time when you have far less runway to recover than you did at 40.
